Thor Cheston, one of Washington's most celebrated beer gurus, is the co-founder and co-owner of Right Proper Brewing Company.  While studying for the MCAT exam after attending Georgetown University, Thor confessed to his family that he did not want to be a doctor.  Instead, he wanted to follow passion for beer, with the ultimate goal of owning his own brewery.

In 2006 Thor Cheston along with Washington chef Ruth Gresser turned an underutilized basement dining space at Pizzeria Paradiso Georgetown into a specialty beer bar with 16 draft beers and 100 bottled beers.  Dubbed Birreria Paradiso, the beer bar was a success and currently rated by as one of the best beer bars in the world.

Thor’s passion and dedication led him to Philadelphia to work as the beer buyer for Eulogy Belgian Tavern.  Thor left Philadelphia to assist in the opening of Brasserie Beck in DC by renowned chef Robert Wiedmaier.  He began as a bartender and within two years earned the position of general manager and beer director.  Under Thor's direction Brasserie Beck was named as one of the top beer bars in DC by the Washington Post and by

On September 4, 2009 Thor was given the honor of being inducted into the Knighthood of the Brewers’ Mashstaff in Brussels, Belgium.  The Knighthood of the Brewers’ Mashstaff (Belgian Brewers’ Guild) is an organization that is a direct descendant of the secular guild of Belgian brewers that works to perpetuate the traditions and nobility of the brewers’ trade.

While still general manager for Brasserie Beck, Thor opened Mussel Bar for the Robert Wiedmaier Group as a managing partner in 2010.   In September 2011, Thor left his responsibilities at Brasserie Beck and Mussel Bar to concentrate on his goal of opening his own brewing company.  After two long years, he opened his brewpub Right Proper Brewing Company in the historic Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC.  Thor’s family-friendly neighborhood restaurant, equipped with a 5bbl brewhouse was immediately embraced by the local community.

Building on the success of the brewpub, Thor and his partners built a 10,000 bbl capacity production facility in Brookland so Right Proper beers can be sold to retail and off-premise accounts throughout the Washington area.  Right Proper beers are available at 70 different DC bars and restaurants. When not at one of the two Right Proper locations, Thor is usually spending time with his wife Leah and their two gigantic pitbulls or spending too much money on vinyl records.
